Advice
Woody perfumes, grouped by wood
Woody perfumes rest on warm or opulent notes such as sandalwood and patchouli, or dry ones such as cedar and vetiver, according to the Société Française des Parfumeurs. The cedar group runs from Dior Homme and Terre d’Hermès to L’Eau d’Issey pour Homme Eau & Cèdre; sandalwood brings Diptyque Tam Dao and Libre Santal Couture, vetiver brings Guerlain Vétiver and Lalique Encre Noire, and woody amber brings Dior Bois d’Argent. Five picks are presented for men, Libre Santal Couture for women, and Tam Dao, Royal Oud and Bois d’Argent for women and men.
What makes a perfume woody
In the classification of the Société Française des Parfumeurs, a woody perfume rests on warm or opulent notes such as sandalwood and patchouli, sometimes dry like cedar or vetiver, and its top note is usually lavender and citrus. Woods entered that classification with its second edition, in 1990; the first edition of 1984 had five families.
The SFP splits the family into sub-families, from woody conifer citrus and woody spicy to woody musky. Woody amber is one of them, with a base of vanilla, hay, coumarin, cistus, labdanum, patchouli and sandalwood. The five groups on this page (cedar, sandalwood, vetiver, oud and patchouli, and woody amber) are our own reading of those definitions, not a grouping the SFP publishes. Browse all woody perfumes for the full family; the eleven picks that follow are grouped by their wood notes, each with the wearer its house names where it names one.

Cedar: the dry woods
Three scents in this group build on cedar, which the SFP counts with vetiver as a dry note. Terre d’Hermès sets it against grapefruit and flint; the other two stay closer to spice, vetiver and water.
Dior
Dior Homme
Eau de toilette · 2020
Dior Homme is a 2020 Eau de toilette by François Demachy, in which Atlas cedar embraces Haitian vetiver “tinged with spice”. The house credits the cedar with a “dry and subtly leathery warmth”. It reinterprets an original Dior Homme from 2005 and is presented for men.
View perfumeHermès
Terre d’Hermès
Eau de toilette · 2006
Hermès introduced Terre d’Hermès in 2006, a men’s Eau de toilette by Jean-Claude Ellena. Hermès speaks of “a mineral, woody fragrance” that joins the strength of cedar and the radiance of grapefruit with a vibrant touch of flint. Ellena chose woody notes, Atlas cedar above all, because the perfume “had to be vertical”.

L’Eau d’Issey pour Homme Eau & Cèdre
Eau de toilette intense · 30 years after L’Eau d’Issey
Water meets cedar in L’Eau d’Issey pour Homme Eau & Cèdre, an Eau de toilette intense the house places 30 years after the release of L’Eau d’Issey. In Issey Miyake’s words, Calone brings transparency and fluidity to the warm roughness of cedarwood, while vetiver and patchouli fill out the forest behind it. Presented for men.

Sandalwood: the creamy woods
Sandalwood sits at the warm, opulent end of the family, and the two houses here frame it differently. Creed’s Original Santal carries sandalwood in its name, but Creed files it as aromatic fougère and ambery, so it belongs with the fougère perfumes instead.
Diptyque
Tam Dao
Eau de parfum · line launched 2003
Tam Dao puts Mysore sandalwood at the centre, with milky, slightly spicy facets cooled by cypress and myrtle. Its headline notes are sandalwood, cedar, cypress and coriander, and in this Eau de parfum, Diptyque says, Asian spices highlight the sandalwood’s creamy nuances. The 2003 date belongs to the first Tam Dao; the Eau de parfum shown here came later. Diptyque presents each of its fragrances as free from any notion of gender, so this pick is for women and men.

Libre Santal Couture
Eau de parfum · limited edition, 50 ml only
Libre Santal Couture is a limited edition sold in a single 50 ml size, and YSL introduces it as the first woody floral scent in the LIBRE collection. French lavender and Moroccan orange blossom meet New Caledonian sandalwood, and YSL sums the result up as “a feminine reinterpretation of woods”. Presented for women.

Vetiver: the dry, earthy root
Vetiver is a perennial plant with an odorous root system rather than a wood, yet the SFP places it with cedar on the dry side of the woody family. Dior notes that its essential oil comes from steam distillation and that its accords are used in woody, chypre and amber compositions. Two eaux de toilette put it at the centre.
Guerlain
Vétiver
Eau de toilette · 1959
Vétiver dates from 1959 and was Jean-Paul Guerlain’s first perfume. Guerlain builds it on vetiver, tonka bean, nutmeg and tobacco, with orange, bergamot and lemon giving the start its piquancy, and files it under fresh woody. Presented for men.
View perfumeLalique
Encre Noire
Eau de toilette · 2006
Encre Noire arrived in 2006 from Nathalie Lorson, who set Haitian and Bourbon vetivers over cashmere wood and musk. For Lalique, it is a fragrance created in praise of wood, with cypress and vetyveryl acetate at the top. The house traces the black bottle to René Lalique’s 1913 Biches inkwell. Presented for men.

Oud and patchouli: the smoky, leathery woods
Oud and patchouli share this editorial group, but the three compositions differ. Royal Oud pairs oud with cedarwood, Black Aoud adds rose and leather, and Patchouli Paris centres on patchouli and iris. The SFP also has a woody spicy leather sub-family, built on birch and castoreum; neither material appears in the notes of these three picks.
Creed
Royal Oud
Concentration not listed · 2011
Creed launched Royal Oud in 2011 as its own reading of oud, marrying it to cedarwood, grapefruit and cardamom and calling the result a luminous woody fresh fragrance. At its 2011 presentation, Creed described a lighter, more western and European oud for men and women. The house page does not state a concentration.
View perfumeMontale
Black Aoud
Eau de parfum
Black Aoud is “Montale’s emblematic fragrance”, as the house puts it: Cambodian oud blended with Indonesian patchouli and softened by musk, mandarin and rose. Lemon and saffron sit at the top, rose and patchouli at the heart, leather, guaiac wood, sandalwood and white musk at the base. Montale places it in its oriental family; it sits here for its oud, patchouli and woods.
View perfumeGuerlain
Patchouli Paris
Eau de parfum · July 2024
Patchouli Paris joined L’Art & La Matière in July 2024, composed by Delphine Jelk. Guerlain sets patchouli against powdery, woody iris and lets it run into an amber-toned trail of vanilla, ambergris accord and musk. The collection’s bottle, after Guerlain’s 1870 square bottle, has a design the house terms refined and unisex.

Woody amber
The SFP defines woody amber through a base of vanilla, hay, coumarin, cistus, labdanum, patchouli and sandalwood. Its database files Bois d’Argent in this sub-family, while Dior labels the perfume ambery and floral. Those are two descriptions of the same fragrance, so not every material in the sub-family definition is a Bois d’Argent note.
Dior
Bois d’Argent
Eau de parfum · 2004
Bois d’Argent was one of the three scents that opened Dior’s La Collection Privée in 2004. Its trail, according to Dior, is a wood accord pricked with a powdered iris note and entwined with frankincense, and the house labels it an ambery and floral unisex Eau de parfum. The Société Française des Parfumeurs classifies it as woody amber.

How to choose a woody perfume
- Start from the wood you already like. Cedar lovers have three here, from Terre d’Hermès and its flint to Dior Homme and its spice; sandalwood lovers have Tam Dao and Libre Santal Couture.
- If you want a scent the house presents for women and men both, three of the eleven are sold that way: Tam Dao, Royal Oud and Bois d’Argent.
- Check the concentration. Eaux de toilette: Dior Homme, Terre d’Hermès, Vétiver and Encre Noire. Eaux de parfum: Tam Dao, Libre Santal Couture, Black Aoud, Patchouli Paris and Bois d’Argent. Eau & Cèdre is an eau de toilette intense.
- For oud, Creed presented Royal Oud as a lighter, more western oud; Black Aoud is the one that pairs oud with rose and patchouli.
- For a house-designated women’s woody scent, start with Libre Santal Couture. For men, compare the cedar trio with Guerlain Vétiver and Lalique Encre Noire; Royal Oud adds another route that Creed presents for both women and men.
