How we picked
Four rules decided the list. Vanilla had to appear in the house's own note list or its own description. We had to be able to read the house's own site, and we read each one on 2 November 2026. The twelve had to span different styles, concentrations and houses. And we took one perfume per house, so no single name fills the list.
'Best' here is our editorial choice by those rules. It is not a sales ranking and not a popularity claim. Where a house gives no top, heart and base list, as with Eau Duelle, Goddess, Vanilla Powder, Devotion and Hypnotic Poison, we quote its wording instead of inventing a pyramid. We also leave out launch years and perfumers that we could not confirm from the house itself or a press article.
What vanilla smells like in perfume
Vanilla is not one smell. Givaudan, which supplies perfume ingredients, describes its Madagascar vanilla absolute as 'rich, sweet, creamy, woody and spicy, with facets of leather, caramel and tobacco'. Robertet, another supplier, describes its vanilla absolute as 'ambery/vanillic, vanilla pods, woody'. That is the raw material before any perfumer has touched it.
Houses also name different vanilla materials. Burberry builds Goddess around a trio of vanillas. BDK lists Madagascan vanilla absolute, Matiere Premiere a Madagascar vanilla absolute with a Fair for Life label, and Mancera vanilla pods from Madagascar. Diptyque writes of Bourbon vanilla and Dolce&Gabbana of Madagascan vanilla.
In the note lists of this guide, vanilla sits in the base for Lira, Bianco Latte, Coco Vanille, Love Delight, Carlisle, Velvet Tonka and Ani. It is the part of the perfume that stays on skin once the brighter notes have faded. What surrounds it decides the style: pepper and smoke, cocoa and rum, coconut, powder, tobacco.
The 12 picks, by style
Spicy and woody
These three pair vanilla with spice, resin and wood. Carlisle and Ani lean on resins and woods, which is also why woody perfumes are a natural next stop if this group appeals.
Diptyque
Eau Duelle
Eau de Toilette and Eau de Parfum
Diptyque lists vanilla, pink peppercorn, cypriol and calamus in the Eau de Toilette; the Eau de Parfum's note line has incense where the Eau de Toilette has calamus. On its Eau de Parfum page, the house says its Bourbon vanilla 'retains its full duality, revealing a spicy facet of greater intensity'. In its general guide to the two strengths, Diptyque says an eau de toilette shows a composition with 'lightness and vivacity' and an eau de parfum unfolds 'a more intense and long-lasting trail'. It suits anyone who wants vanilla with a spicy, smoky edge.

Carlisle
Eau de Parfum
Green apple, nutmeg and saffron lead, tonka bean, rose, osmanthus and davana follow, and the base holds vanilla, patchouli and opopanax resinoid. The house points to a 'warm and deep patchouli base'. One reviewer hears 'warm spices, dark vanilla, and patchouli'. A good fit for anyone who wants vanilla under spice and patchouli.
View perfumeNishane
Ani
Extrait de Parfum
Nishane files Ani under 'spicy / woody / vanilla'. Bergamot, green notes, blue ginger and pink pepper sit on top, blackcurrant, Turkish rose and cardamom in the heart. The base is patchouli, cedarwood, vanilla, benzoin, ambergris, musk and sandalwood. It is the pick for a vanilla that behaves like a wood.

Creamy and bright gourmands
Giardini di Toscana
Bianco Latte
Eau de Parfum
The house gives caramel on top, honey and coumarin in the heart, and vanilla with white musks underneath, and files it as amber gourmande. With five notes and no spice or wood among them, it suits those who want comfort rather than contrast.
View perfumeBurberry
Goddess
Eau de Parfum · 2023
Burberry presents a 'unique gourmand fragrance' led by 'a powerful trio of vanillas, enriched with luminous lavender', and calls it 'the first refillable perfume by Burberry'. Amandine Clerc-Marie is the perfumer, according to a July 2023 trade report. That report gives vanilla infusion and lavender on top, vanilla caviar in the heart and vanilla absolute in the base. The house itself gives no note list.
View perfumeDolce&Gabbana
Devotion
Eau de Parfum · 2023
Launched in 2023 and signed by Olivier Cresp, Devotion is, in the house's words, 'the freshness of orange blossom' meeting 'the sweetness of Madagascan vanilla', with candied lemons adding a gourmand touch. A press report names a candied citrus accord on top and sweet vanilla from Madagascar in the base. The house gives no note list. Choose it when you want vanilla with a lift.

Boozy and dessert
Amouage
Love Delight
Eau de Parfum · 20% oil
Ginger, mandarin, rose water and cinnamon open; heliotrope, jasmine and rose form the heart; vanilla, cocoa, rum absolute and cypriol close it. Amouage states a 20% oil concentration and seven weeks of ageing, four of maceration and three of maturation. Pascal Gaurin is the perfumer. The rum makes it the boozy pick, and Amouage sums it up as 'the interplay of delicate florals and irresistible treats'.
View perfumeXerjoff
Lira
Eau de Parfum
Blood orange, lavender flowers and bergamot sit above cinnamon, jasmine and rose, with caramel, musk and vanilla at the base. Xerjoff says Lira 'entices with its deliciously gourmand notes' and gives its scent profile as 'Floral, Gourmand'. It works for those who want sweetness with a floral frame.

Powdery and coconut
Matiere Premiere
Vanilla Powder
Eau de Parfum; Extrait de Parfum also exists
Aurélien Guichard is the perfumer. The house names Madagascar vanilla absolute at the centre, with palo santo essence from Ecuador, coconut powder, white musks and heliotrope. The Extrait text calls the vanilla dark and supple, little sweet, with salty facets, and adds a Venezuelan tonka bean absolute. It is the one for vanilla set against white powders.
View perfumeMancera
Coco Vanille
Eau de Parfum
Coconut and white peach lead, ylang-ylang, tiare flowers and Egyptian jasmine sit in the heart, and the base is woody notes, vanilla pods from Madagascar and white musk. Mancera writes of 'a tropical cocoon where coconut blends with creamy vanilla', 'reminiscent of a sunset on a deserted beach'. A holiday-minded choice.

Almond, tonka and tobacco
BDK Parfums
Velvet Tonka
Eau de Parfum; Extrait also exists
Orange blossom and almond are followed by rose absolute and Balkan tobacco absolute, then tonka bean absolute, Madagascan vanilla absolute, amyris wood and amber woods. Alexandra Carlin is the perfumer. The house describes it as 'almondy and vanilla-infused', an 'oriental gourmand creation dusted with icing sugar'. One critic found 'a decadent gourmand that surprises with its lightness of touch'.
View perfumeDior
Hypnotic Poison
Eau de Toilette and Eau de Parfum
Dior's Eau de Toilette text reads: 'Sensual vanilla and bitter almond meld with a Jasmine Sambac-Sandalwood accord', with star anise and musk. The Eau de Parfum wraps sambac jasmine and orange blossom in tonka bean. A 2006 press review says Dior launched Hypnotic Poison in 1998, credits Annick Menardo and sums it up as 'a creamy-sweet concoction of vanilla sugar, jasmine, and musk'. Pick it for vanilla with bitter almond and white flowers.

How to choose a vanilla perfume
- Dislike sugar? Start with the Vanilla Powder Extrait, which its perfumer calls little sweet with salty facets, or Ani, which Nishane files as 'spicy / woody / vanilla'.
- Craving dessert? Bianco Latte lists caramel and honey, Love Delight cocoa and rum absolute, and Lira caramel and cinnamon.
- For a brighter take, Devotion brings orange blossom and candied lemons next to the vanilla.
- For something unusual, Velvet Tonka brings tobacco, Eau Duelle brings pepper and smoke.
Concentration is named differently from house to house. Ani is an Extrait de Parfum, Vanilla Powder comes as Eau de Parfum and Extrait, and Eau Duelle is sold as both Eau de Toilette and Eau de Parfum. Amouage gives a percentage for Love Delight, 20% oil, while most houses give none. Treat the label as a hint about the version and read the notes for the style.
Vanilla also reads differently from one skin to another. A 3 or 10 ml decant lets you wear a vanilla through a few days before committing to a full bottle. If you lean towards vanilla with fruit and flowers, our Black Opium versions guide covers a perfume that one 2015 review described as having a 'whopper dose of vanilla, fruit, and what smells to me like gardenia'.
Sweet or not? A common misconception
Many people expect vanilla to mean sugar. Several houses here pair it with spice, smoke or salt. Diptyque calls the Eau de Toilette 'sweet and sugary' but sets it against 'smoky accents of cypriol', and writes that the Eau de Parfum's Bourbon vanilla reveals 'a spicy facet of greater intensity'. Matiere Premiere describes its Extrait as little sweet, with salty facets. Parfums de Marly opens Carlisle with nutmeg and saffron beside green apple, above a base of vanilla, patchouli and opopanax resinoid.
Gourmand does not have to mean pudding either. Love Delight sets vanilla beside cocoa, rum absolute, rose and heliotrope. Velvet Tonka adds Balkan tobacco absolute. Lira adds cinnamon and lavender flowers. The note is the same; the company it keeps changes the style.
