Tonka Bean

48

Tonka bean is the seed of a tall tree native to South America. Once dried and cured, it gives off a smell of sweet hay, vanilla, almond and a little spice. This warmth comes largely from coumarin, a molecule that also occurs in the bean. Perfumers use tonka to add a soft, powdery, gourmand sweetness, especially in base notes. It pairs with vanilla, lavender, oakmoss and woods, and it appears in many fougères as well as sweeter orientals. The effect is cosy and smooth rather than sugary.

Tonka bean mostly sits in the base here, adding a smooth, almond-like sweetness that softens woods and spice.
