Cypriol
5Cypriol is the perfumer's name for the oil of Cyperus scariosus, a sedge whose roots are distilled. It smells dark and earthy, with woody smoke, a dry, spicy depth and a rough, leathery edge that recalls damp soil and incense. It is not a sweet material. Perfumers reach for cypriol when a base needs weight and character, and it works especially well beside oud, patchouli, leather and amber. In small amounts it adds a mysterious, slightly smoky richness to woods and resins.
Cypriol mostly lives in the base in this range, with a smaller group in the heart, giving woods and amber a dark, smoky depth.
