Guaiac wood is the dense, oily heartwood of South American trees, distilled into a thick oil. It smells smoky, sweet and a little rosy, with a faint tea-like dryness and a soft, tarry warmth. It is gentler and rounder than oud or birch tar. Perfumers use guaiac wood to add a smoky, polished woodiness to florals, amber and leather, and it pairs well with sandalwood, rose, patchouli and incense. A small amount gives a fragrance a quiet, burnished glow. The smell is distinctive but never harsh.
Guaiac wood mostly sits in the base in this range, adding a smoky, softly sweet wood that warms the other notes.
