Orris

40

Orris is the dried root of certain iris plants, not the flower. The rhizomes are aged for years, then processed into orris butter, one of the most valued ingredients in perfumery. The smell is powdery and soft, with a cool, earthy edge, a trace of violet and a buttery, slightly woody warmth. It reads as elegant and a little dry rather than sweet. Perfumers use it to give florals a polished, cosmetic softness and to add a pale, velvety texture to woods and musks. In small amounts it makes the other notes look cleaner and more refined.

In this range it mostly sits in the heart, where its powdery, cool softness smooths the move from bright openings to deeper bases.
