The best perfumes for women, picked by scent style
No single perfume is the best for every woman, so this page picks by scent style. Delina is the rose, Blanche the crisp linen, Fleur de Peau the musk. Hundred Silent Ways brings tuberose, Guidance amber, Tilia a sunny summer floral and Kirke a fruity sweetness. Every pick quotes the house's own notes.
How we picked these perfumes
A list of the best perfumes for women is a question of taste, so we do not rank by popularity. We chose by four stated criteria, and "best" means our editorial choice under them.
- The house's own note list exists and can be quoted.
- The eight cover eight different scent styles: rose floral, crisp and clean, soft white floral, musk, tuberose, amber, sunny summer and fruity.
- No house appears more than twice. Parfums de Marly has two places; every other house has one.
- Nothing is claimed that the house or a named source has not said.
The women's and men's labels are mostly marketing. Byredo describes Blanche as "Genderless", and Diptyque says its fragrances are "Free from any notion of gender". Parfums de Marly frames Delina as feminine: its founder calls it "a tribute to women". So read these as perfumes many women choose, not as perfumes reserved for them.
Sizes matter before a full bottle does. Fragrance designer Brianna Arps, as Business Insider reports, suggests a discovery kit of several scents in small quantities before buying a bottle. parfum1 lists 3 and 10 ml sizes of all eight.

Parfums de Marly
Delina
Eau de Parfum
Bergamot, lychee and rhubarb sit on top in the house's account, Damascena rose and nutmeg in the heart, and cashmeran, musks and vetiver underneath. Parfums de Marly describes it as "Addictive, sensual and generous." It suits anyone who wants rose at the centre of the scent, with lychee and rhubarb above it.

Valaya
Eau de Parfum
The brand describes "a veil of linen caressing the skin, with vibrant mandarin, creamy white flowers and rich akigalawood". Its notes run from bergamot, mandarin and white peach through orange blossom and white flowers to white musks, akigalawood, vanilla and vetiver. The house files it as floral, musky and woody, and sums it up as "Elegant, delicate and sensual." Of the two Parfums de Marly picks, it is the one built on white flowers and musk rather than rose.

Hundred Silent Ways
Extrait de Parfum
Nishane puts tuberose, mandarin and peach on top, white jasmine, gardenia and orris in the heart, and vanilla, sandalwood and vetiver at the base. The house places it in the floral, gourmand and musky families. Choose it when you want white flowers over a vanilla, sandalwood and vetiver base, in extrait de parfum.

Clean and fresh: crisp linen and everlasting summer
Byredo builds Blanche around "a fresh white shirt against the skin"; Marc-Antoine Barrois sums up Tilia as "Simple. Solar. Smiling." One gets there through aldehydes, the other through linden blossom.
Byredo
Blanche
Eau de Parfum · medium intensity
Byredo says Blanche "embodies the sensation of a fresh white shirt against the skin" and "opens with a crisp burst of Aldehyde and the soft elegance of Rose Centifolia", evoking "the freshness of clean linen". Peony and violet form the heart, with musks and sandalwood below. Wear it when you want to smell of clean linen.

Tilia
Eau de Parfum · launched April 2024
The house words it as "Simple. Solar. Smiling." and "the scent of an everlasting summer". Its notes are linden blossom, jasmine sambac, broom, vetiver, heliotrope, Georgywood and Ambroxan, and the house credits the perfumer Quentin Bisch. The house also says it has not been reformulated since its launch on April 1, 2024. Reach for it on warm days.

Musk, amber and fruit
The last group is about musk, amber and fruit: musk at the heart of Fleur de Peau, cistus and ambergris at the base of Guidance, vanilla and sandalwood under Kirke's fruit. On how long a scent lasts, Clayton Ilolahia tells Harper's Bazaar that fresh scents with dominant fruit or green notes tend to have less staying power.
Diptyque
Fleur de Peau
Eau de Parfum
Diptyque names four key notes: musk, iris, ambrette and pink peppercorn. Per Diptyque, the musks are "as cottony and light as they are soft and moist", and iris and ambrette seeds bring out the musks' tactile side. Pick it if you want a soft, cottony musk.

Guidance
Eau de Parfum · 2023
Amouage released Guidance in 2023, in its Odyssey Collection, with Quentin Bisch as the perfumer. It opens on pear, frankincense and hazelnut, moves through saffron, rose, jasmine sambac and osmanthus, and rests on cistus, sandalwood, akigalawood, ambergris and vanilla. The house states a 25% oil concentration and says it "reads like a poem, smells like an embrace". It is the evening pick, and the one to read alongside our woody perfumes guide if the sandalwood appeals.

Kirke
Extrait de Parfum
The Italian product listing gives passion fruit, peach and raspberry, blackcurrant, pear and warm sand on top, lily of the valley in the heart, and heliotrope, sandalwood, vanilla, patchouli and musk at the base. That reads as fruit first and powder after, for anyone who likes sweetness with a soft finish.

How to choose and test on skin
Start with the family you already enjoy. Business Insider's perfumer tips suggest noting which families you like, such as gourmands, florals or citrus, and then narrowing to individual notes.
- Test on skin. Business Insider, reporting the advice of fragrance-house founder Romano Ricci, says it is important to test a fragrance on your skin "to see how it will really sit".
- Sample only three or four scents at a time, about ten minutes apart.
- Let it develop, so the top, middle and base layers all show before you decide.
- Give it time. Fragrance developer Carlos Huber says that if you don't like it within an hour, then it is not meant to be your signature scent.
Applying it well helps too. Allure Philippines quotes a perfumer saying "Moisture locks in fragrances, making them last longer", that pulse points have more heat, "allowing the fragrance to diffuse", and that "Textiles retain fragrances longer."
Eau de parfum, eau de toilette and extrait
Most of the eight are eau de parfum. Hundred Silent Ways and Kirke are sold as extrait de parfum. The names are looser than they look: IFRA, the industry standards body, calls them "general descriptors commonly found on fragrance product labels" that are "not strictly defined by international standards".
IFRA does give typical ranges of fragrance in the finished product: eau de toilette 5-15%, eau de parfum 10-20% and perfume extract 15-40%. Harper's Bazaar's expert Clayton Ilolahia adds that the higher the ratio of perfume concentrate, the longer-lasting the fragrance will be on the skin.
Designer favourites, compared by version
If you already wear a designer fragrance, the version guides show how each one differs: Miss Dior, La Vie Est Belle, Good Girl, Black Opium and Prada Paradoxe. The Jean Paul Gaultier and Mugler line guides do the same for whole ranges.
