Tonka
4Tonka bean is the seed of Dipteryx odorata, a tree from South America. The seed contains coumarin, the molecule responsible for its smell, which is sweet and warm like freshly cut hay with notes of almond, vanilla and caramel. It is dry rather than syrupy, and slightly tobacco-like. Perfumers use tonka as a base material because it rounds off sharp edges and carries other notes smoothly to the end of the wear. It is the natural partner of vanilla, amber, lavender and woods, and it gives gourmand compositions a soft, comforting finish.
Tonka is a base note across nearly every fragrance here, adding sweet, hay-like warmth that rounds vanilla, amber and woods and shapes the dry-down.
