Saffron
33Saffron is made from the dried threads of a crocus flower, each picked by hand, which is why it is so valued. In perfume it smells warm, dry and a little leathery, with a metallic, honeyed brightness and a hint of dried spice. It is not sweet like cinnamon or sharp like pepper. Perfumers use saffron to give an opening a rich, golden colour, and it pairs well with rose, oud, amber and woods. It often brings a luxurious, slightly mysterious feel to both feminine and masculine compositions.
Saffron appears mostly in the top notes here, with a smaller presence in the heart, adding a dry, golden spice to the opening.
