Cassis is the French word for blackcurrant, and in perfumery it usually means the material taken from the buds of the blackcurrant bush, Ribes nigrum. The bud absolute is a classic ingredient with a very particular smell: tart, green and juicy, with a sharp dark-berry edge and a slightly musky, almost animal undertone.
Lemon oil is pressed from the peel of the fruit, where the scent is concentrated. In perfume it smells sharp, bright and zesty, with a clean tartness that is less sweet than orange and less floral than bergamot.
Passionfruit comes from Passiflora vines and has a sharp, tart juiciness with a tropical sweetness. The aroma is intense: part citrus, part ripe tropical fruit, with a tang that wakes up whatever sits next to it.
Carnation is the flower Dianthus caryophyllus, long loved for a scent that mixes petals with spice. It smells floral and peppery at once, with a warm, clove-like heart and a light sweetness.
Lily-of-the-valley, known in perfumery as muguet, is a tiny white bell flower that gives no extractable oil. Perfumers recreate its scent with aroma molecules.
Musk was once taken from a gland of the male musk deer. Today perfumers use synthetic musks, which are cleaner and more varied.
