Clary Sage

Clary sage is a Mediterranean herb whose flowering tops and leaves are distilled into an essential oil. The smell is herbal and aromatic, with a dry, hay-like sweetness and a faint tea-like, ambery undertone. It is greener and rounder than common garden sage and less sharp than lavender. Perfumers reach for it in colognes, fougères and fresh woody compositions, where it adds a smooth herbal middle ground between citrus and wood. It can also lend a warm, slightly musky depth to amber and leather accords. The effect is clean and dry, never sugary.
