Why is perfume so expensive? What the companies report and spend
Three listed groups report 63–75% gross margins; Interparfums spends 19.8% of sales on advertising and promotion. Plus Dior’s roses and EU allergen rules.
No audited split of one bottle's price turned up in the company reports and trade sources read, but the listed groups do report what they keep and spend. Interparfums, Coty and Puig report gross margins of 63.6%, 62.9% and 75.1%, and Interparfums put 19.8% of its sales into advertising and promotion in 2025. The article also covers Dior's Grasse flowers, what stronger concentrations and bigger bottles cost per ml, and a new EU allergen rule.
The short answer: the price is not just the liquid
Articles on this question often quote tidy splits, such as the liquid being a few per cent of the price and marketing taking a third. The ones found while researching this came from blogs, sellers and old interviews, they disagree with one another, and none gave company accounts as its source. They are left out.
What can be checked is narrower. Listed companies publish what they keep after making their products, and what they spend on advertising. Official house stores show what a stronger concentration or a larger bottle costs per millilitre. Press accounts of one Grasse flower farm describe how much land and harvest a house reserves for its flowers. Only those are used.
What fragrance companies keep and spend
Three listed groups give a usable picture. Their gross margin is the share of sales left after the cost of making the goods. It is not profit: selling, advertising and running costs come out of it afterwards.
| Company | Gross margin | What else it reported | Scope |
|---|---|---|---|
| Interparfums, Inc. (2025) | 63.6% | Net sales $1.49bn; advertising and promotion $295m, or 19.8% of sales; SG&A 45.5% of sales | Fragrance business |
| Coty (year to 30 June 2026) | 62.9% | Net revenue $5,806.6m; Prestige $3,805.8m, 66% of sales; gross margin down 190 basis points from 64.8% a year earlier | Whole group, including consumer beauty |
| Puig (2025) | 75.1% | Net revenue €5,042m; Fragrance and Fashion 72% of revenue; adjusted EBITDA margin 20.7% | Whole group, including makeup and skincare |
Interparfums spent $295m on advertising and promotion in 2025, up 5% from $281m, which is 19.8% of net sales against 19.3% a year earlier. That is one cost of selling. Its selling, general and administrative expenses came to 45.5% of net sales, up from 44.7%.
Tariffs added cost too. Interparfums reported $12.8m of extra cost in 2025, or 0.9% of its sales.
Read the gap between gross margin and what remains with care. Puig's adjusted EBITDA margin of 20.7% is a different measure again, for a group that also sells makeup and skincare. Three companies are not the whole industry, and none of these ratios says what share of any one bottle is profit.
What a stronger version costs: about 13% more per ml from eau de toilette to eau de parfum
A higher concentration carries a higher price per millilitre. parfum1 priced 87 lines from 15 houses on each house's own French store on 2 November 2026, comparing price per millilitre (139 of the 146 steps use the same bottle size). The median step from Eau de Toilette to Eau de Parfum is +13.3% per ml across 38 lines. From Eau de Parfum to Parfum it is +14.4% across 35 lines, and from Parfum to Elixir +8.6% across 19 lines. Across all 146 steps the median is +11.7%. The full table is in what a stronger concentration costs per ml.
Extrait is a different league. From Eau de Parfum to Extrait or Esprit de Parfum the median is +83.3% across six lines, five of them Dior lines compared at 100 ml against 80 ml. Guerlain's Shalimar at 30 ml goes from €83 as an Eau de Parfum to €355 as an Extrait, which is €276.67 against €1,183.33 per 100 ml, a rise of 327.7%.
A stronger version is not always dearer. Five of the 146 steps cost the same or less. BOSS Alive Eau de Parfum to Intense at 30 ml is 0%, and Burberry Her Parfum to Elixir is −4.4%.
How much less a bigger bottle costs per ml
Within one house, the larger size usually has the lower price per millilitre. The same dataset shows it at two houses.
| Perfume | Smaller size | Larger size |
|---|---|---|
| BOSS Alive Eau de Parfum | 30 ml, €85: €283.33 per 100 ml | 50 ml, €120: €240 per 100 ml |
| Guerlain Shalimar Eau de Toilette | 50 ml, €102: €204 per 100 ml | 90 ml, €137: about €152 per 100 ml |
| Guerlain Vétiver Eau de Toilette | 100 ml, €120: €120 per 100 ml | 150 ml, €144: €96 per 100 ml |
No source read for this article explains why larger sizes cost less per ml, so the table shows the price gap and leaves the reason open.
Dior's flower farm in Grasse
Some perfumes rest on plants grown on land set aside for one house. The Domaine de Manon, a flower farm in Grasse, is described by Tatler Asia as Parfums Christian Dior's exclusive flower producer, supplying the house for about a decade as of 2019. The farm's Jasmine and May Rose Absolutes went into J'adore L'Or.
OniriQ reports that Dior distilled the entire 2021 May rose harvest of the Domaine de Manon for Miss Dior Rose Essence, and that the exclusive supply comes from the whole harvest of 3 hectares planted with jasmine grandiflorum and centifolia roses. For Miss Dior's own versions, see the Miss Dior versions compared.
No flower count per kilo of absolute is quoted here: the figures found in the sources read differ from one another.
A perfume with rose in its heart shows how a house names such a material. Parfums de Marly lists Delina with top notes of bergamot, lychee and rhubarb, a heart of Damascena rose and nutmeg, and a base of cashmeran, musks and vetiver. The list names the rose. It does not say how much real rose absolute is in the bottle, and no source read for this page does.
Parfums de Marly
Delina
Eau de Parfum
The house describes Delina as opening with juicy, sweet lychee, revealing a heart of Damascena rose and a trail of soft musks and cashmeran. Shops and fan sites list the heart differently; the house wording is used here.

The 2026 EU rule on allergens
Commission Regulation (EU) 2023/1545 of 26 July 2023 added 56 fragrance allergens that must be declared individually on labels. Brands placing cosmetic products on the EU market had to comply by 31 July 2026. Products already on the market before that date may keep being sold until 31 July 2028.
The compliance consultancy Obelis describes these substances as widely used in perfumes and other scented cosmetic products, and advises brands to test finished products, add the allergen to the label where it passes the threshold, and update supplier documents. None of the sources behind this page puts a cost on it, so the rule is listed here as a new obligation, not as a price driver with a number attached.
Where you can pay less for the same bottle
The same bottle costs different amounts depending on the country and the shop. parfum1 checked 10 bottles in 5 countries on 2 November 2026, 124 delivered prices in all. Germany had the lowest price for 7 of the 10. Across the 9 bottles priced in the Netherlands, its price was a median 51.7% above the lowest, and the widest gap was Prada Paradoxe 90 ml, €99.94 at the lowest against €176.55 at the highest, 76.7% apart. The breakdown is in what the same perfume costs delivered, country by country.
Size is the other lever, as shown above. Before paying for a full bottle, a smaller amount lets you check the perfume on skin: parfum1 lists 3 and 10 ml decants for that. For wardrobe ideas, best perfumes for men and best perfumes for women are good places to start.
