Amouage Guidance Eau de Parfum bottle

Perfume is a well-liked Christmas gift: 79% of Germans surveyed like to give a scent, and 69% of French adults name it their favourite cosmetics gift. Choose by scent style and by what the person already wears. If you are unsure, give a small size. Our eight picks run from Delina rose to Layton apple and lavender. In the French house stores we checked, the median Eau de Parfum costs €117 at 50 ml. Written 2 November 2026.

Why perfume works as a Christmas gift

In Germany, an IKW survey with fieldwork in November 2025 found that 79% of respondents like to give a scent, and 69.5% are delighted to receive a perfume themselves. The release adds that perfume is the favourite Christmas pick of all beauty products, across age groups and for both women and men, without a figure.

France shows a similar picture. An OpinionWay survey for the cosmetics federation FEBEA, run on 20 and 21 November 2024 among 1,082 adults, reports that perfume is the top festive gift among cosmetics for 69% of the French, and for 76% of people over 50. Gift sets came second, at 38%. The 69% counts people naming perfume as their preferred cosmetics gift, not people who give it.

Timing matters too. In the UK, Circana's figures for December 2024, shared with CEW UK, show fragrance growing 97% in week 52, the final week of the year's festive trading, and the report calls fragrance a last-minute Christmas gift. In the US, Circana's 2024 holiday outlook put the fourth quarter at over 40 percent of annual sales in each fragrance channel. Both are market data from outside the EU: the UK figure shows a late spike, and the US figure shows how much of a year's fragrance buying falls in the fourth quarter.

How to choose a perfume for someone else

Press advice on gifting scent is thin, so these steps lean on what fragrance founders and experts say about choosing, applied to a gift.

  1. Start with what they wear now. A bottle on their shelf tells you the family: floral, fresh, woody or amber. If it comes from a line with several versions, our comparisons for Miss Dior, Acqua di Giò or BOSS Bottled show how the versions differ.
  2. Read the house's note list. Notes are the plainest way to match a perfume to a taste. The eight picks below quote the house's own lists.
  3. Remember that skin changes a scent. Business Insider's piece on finding a signature scent says it is important to test a fragrance on your skin to see how it will really sit. A gift cannot be tested by the recipient first, which is the case for staying close to what they already like.
  4. Go small when unsure. Brianna Arps, founder of Moodeaux, recommends trying a discovery kit of multiple scents in even smaller quantities before buying a bottle. In Harper's Bazaar, Jeff Miller of Free Yourself says: "A discovery set is permission to be curious." A 3 or 10 ml decant of the exact perfume applies the same idea to a single scent.
  5. Check the concentration. Eau de Parfum usually costs more than Eau de Toilette at the same size, a median 13.3% more per ml across 38 lines; the figures are in the cost section.

Eight perfume gifts by scent style

Our rule: eight different scent styles, each with a note list we read on the house's own page, and no more than three from one house. This is an editorial selection, not a ranking. For wider lists, see best perfumes for women, best perfumes for men and best niche perfumes.

  • Parfums de Marly

    Delina

    Eau de Parfum

For a romantic rose floral. The house names Bergamot, Lychee and Rhubarb at the top, Damascena Rose and Nutmeg in the heart, and Cashmeran, Musks and Vetiver in the base. Parfums de Marly says it opens with juicy, sweet lychee, revealing a heart of Damascena rose. It suits someone who already likes rose and would enjoy it with lychee on top.

  • Byredo

    Blanche

    Eau de Parfum

The easy, clean choice for a person whose taste you cannot read. Byredo opens with Aldehyde and Rose Centifolia, then Peony and Violet, over Musks and Sandalwood, and describes it as a tribute to the beauty of contrasts. It is our editorial pick for a first gift, not a popularity claim.

  • Parfums de Marly

    Althaïr

    Eau de Parfum

Warm and sweet, for winter. The house gives Bergamot, Mandarin and Elemi at the top, Orange Blossom, Cinnamon and Cardamom in the heart, and Bourbon Vanilla, Guaicwood and Praline below. Parfums de Marly says it combines the smoothness of vanilla, the indulgence of praline and the brightness of orange blossom. More in our vanilla guide.

Fresh and spicy, a good fit for the apple-and-lavender side of a wardrobe. Its own line: the freshness of apple with calming lavender, wrapped in the earthy depth of patchouli.

    Guidance

    Eau de Parfum · 2023

An amber floral. Amouage released it in 2023, with Quentin Bisch behind it, and calls it a novel interpretation of the Amouage triad of Rose, Frankincense and Ambergris. Notes run from Pear, Frankincense and Hazelnut through Saffron, Rose, Jasmine Sambac and Osmanthus to Cistus, Sandalwood, Akigalawood, Ambergris and Vanilla. The house states a 25% oil concentration.

    Decision

    Eau de Parfum

Incense, spice and vanilla. Amouage opens with Pink Pepper, Bergamot and Cardamom, then Frankincense, Juniper and Myrrh, over Patchouli, Cedarwood and Vanilla. Quentin Bisch composed it and the house gives a 33% oil concentration. Choose it for someone drawn to resins and woods. See also woody perfumes.

  • Nishane

    Hacivat

    Extrait de Parfum · 2017

Citrus and woods in a chypre. Nishane starts with bergamot, pineapple and grapefruit, then jasmine, patchouli and cedarwood, over clearwood, oakmoss and dry timberwood. Nishane's page for Hacivat X says Hacivat launched in 2017. A fit for someone who wears fresh scents but wants more depth.

  • Ex Nihilo

    Blue Talisman

    Eau de Parfum

Pear and ginger over musks. Ex Nihilo gives Pear, Bergamot, Ginger and Mandarin, Orange blossom and Georgywood in the heart, and Ambrofix, Akigalawood and Musks in the base; Jordi Fernández created it. The house calls it a hypnotic jewel and a lucky charm for the skin.

Byredo lists Blanche as genderless. We group Delina and Guidance with classic feminine styles and Layton and Hacivat with classic masculine ones, as our own habit, not a house label. Blanche, Decision and Blue Talisman are the ones we would give to anyone.

What a perfume gift costs

We took the Eau de Parfum core lines of 15 houses from our concentration data page, each priced on its own French store on 2 November 2026. The median bottle costs €83 at 30 ml, €117 at 50 ml and €148 at 100 ml. These count bottle-size rows, not unique perfumes, and the 100 ml prices range from €127 to €300.

Concentration moves the price. Across 38 lines, the midpoint step from Eau de Toilette to Eau de Parfum at the same size is +13.3% per ml. Guerlain's Habit Rouge goes from €120 to €129 per 100 ml, and Armani Acqua di Giò from €120 to €135. Delivery can add to the total, which our country comparison covers.

Advent calendars and gift sets in 2026

Gift sets rank second among favourite cosmetics gifts in France, at 38%. Houses have launched their Christmas 2026 sets already. Diptyque's limited "Advent Calendar - 25 scented treasures" costs €450 on its EU store and holds six Eau de Parfum, among them Bois Corsé and Lazulio at 10 ml each and Fleur de Peau, Orphéon, Tam Dao and Eau Rose at 7.5 ml each, plus candles, body care and a room spray. The house's line: each day reveals a new wonder as the festivities draw near.

When we read the pages on 2 November, two advent calendars were already unavailable on the US stores. Penhaligon's US Advent Calendar was out of stock with a waitlist, and Xerjoff's first Advent calendar, which includes Primi Venti at 50 ml and Torino 25, Gibeon, Golden Moka and Cruz del Sur II at 2 ml each, showed as sold out. If a calendar is the plan, look early.

Harper's Bazaar, on 8 October 2026, framed discovery sets as a gift for a friend or a relative, and noted that Dior's The Perfumer's Palette holds eight minis.

A small size is a safe way to give a scent

If you know the family but not the exact taste, a 3 or 10 ml decant of the perfume you chose lets the recipient try it before anyone commits to a full bottle. It follows the sampling advice above, in a single scent. Wrap two or three for a small discovery set of your own.

Buying earlier avoids the final-week rush that Circana saw in the UK in December 2024.
